This is the information you will want to know concerning the various competitions and
awards for the Varsity Scout Blackfoot Fort Mountain Man Rendezvous.
Individual Event Awards:
These are the awards given for the individual competition events on Saturday morning. The skills
and games in the morning have four purposes. First, is to learn the skills needed for many of the
tests of the Colter Run. Second, to determine who on your team is best at each of the individual
skills of the Colter Run. Third, the morning activities will determine the individual winners for the best
Blackpowder Shooter, Archer,Knife and Hawk Thrower, Caber and Cannonball Tosser. Fourth, is to
have fun. Adult unit leaders will compete in the Blackpowder Shoot, Hawk and Knife Throw and the
Caber and Cannonball Toss. Awards will be given for first, second and third place for adults and
scouts. The Caber and Cannonball Toss will have awards for 14-15 and 16-18 years old divisions.
Points will be awarded for the scout winners towards the Top Unit Award.
Colter Run:
This is the activity held Saturday afternoon. Each competitive team has to be made up of 4-6 scouts.
The team will be assigned their starting event of the Colter Run by random drawing. They will have
to go to each of the eight events listed on their Colter Run Scorecard. After the first event, they may
go to the events in any order. The entire team must arrive at the event before they can compete.
Four of the events will have only one member of the team compete. Hawk and knife throwing,
archery and blackpowder shooting will require a different member of the team to compete. After the
task has been completed, the team will move on to the next event of their choice. The winning
places are determined by which team crosses the finish line first. How well they perform in the
events makes no difference in the overall outcome. You have to just finish the assigned task before
you can move on to the next event. So, you need to finish the task as quickly as possible. All
members of the team, must cross the finish line together. Your scorecard will be checked to validate
that you accomplished all eight tasks.
The Top Unit Award:
(This award may have a different name by the rendezvous, but it will be judged the same.)
This award is given to the unit that accrues the most points throughout the rendezvous. A team
collects points by doing the following: Points are awarded to teams that volunteer at the campfire
and flag ceremonies. (You volunteer for these by checking the appropriate box on the registration
form. The teams are selected on a first to volunteer basis.) This year, teams will get points if their
leaders volunteer to assist in cooking or helping at the events. points are also earned for any first,
second or third place individual awards won during the morning activities, as well as the Colter Run.
Adult leader’s results from the morning competition will not be given points toward this award.
The individual winners of the individual events will receive ten points for first, five points for second
and three points for third. Participation in the campfire or flag ceremony is worth ten points.
Winning the Colter Run is worth fifteen points for first, ten for second and five for third. Units will
receive ten points for a leader volunteering. This is ten points only, no matter how many leaders
vollunteer. The Booshway has the right to award points for actions during the rendezvous that
deserves special recognition. This is at the Booshway’s descretion. (This is NOT for bribing the
Booshway! But, you may want to try anyway, just in case.) The point amounts given may change
prior to the Rendezvous. You will receive notice of any changes when you register.
The Booshway’s Award:
This great award is given at the closing ceremony. It is given to the unit that does the best job
representing a group of mountain men. The judging is the sole responsibility and at the discretion of
the Booshway. Things that he looks for are that all the boys and the leaders are dressed as mountain
men. That their camp is representative of a mountain man camp. Canvas tents, no modern (or
as little as possible) equipment in view, etc. Craft displays in camp, etc.. Information on how to camp
as a mountain men is found our rendezvous website.
The Best Dressed Mountain Men Award:
This coveted award is given to the scouts who have done the best job dressing as mountain men.
Some of the things that are looked for are authenticity, complete outfits, originality and style. The
scouts that want to be judged must come to the closing ceremony in their outfits. Chosen members
of the Booshway’s staff will judge the scouts at the beginning of the closing ceremony. We will give
this award to the eight best dressed scouts. They do not have to be from the same unit. This is an
individual award. Past award have been bone chokers, patch knives and beaded medicine bags.
Mountain Man Raffle:
We will have a raffle again this year. Any scout or leader who makes an effort to dress as a mountain
man will receive a ticket at the opening ceremony. The raffle will be drawn at the closing ceremony.
An even number of raffle items will be available for adults and scouts. It would be a good idea to
come to the closing dressed as a mountain man. This years items are still being gathered but will
include a hat, patch knife, throwing hawk, possibles bag, strike-a-light and more.
